December can fill with plans before you have made time for the people you most want to see. This year, give yourselves an evening to slow down over dinner, share the excitement of live performance and come home with something better than another checked-off Christmas errand: a memory together.

On Saturday, December 19, 2026, at 7:30 PM, An Irish Christmas returns to San Diego’s Balboa Theatre. Joining the celebration for a second year are guest dancers from Clan Rince School of Irish Dance, bringing a welcome hometown connection to an evening of Irish dance, live music, song and storytelling.

Make it a family outing, a girls’ night or a date night with dinner and a show. Choose your seats first, then use this downtown itinerary to build an evening that feels like an occasion.

A San Diego Dance Family Returns to the Balboa

There is something special about seeing your own community represented on a professional stage. After performing with An Irish Christmas at the Balboa Theatre in 2025, Clan Rince’s guest dancers return in 2026 to share that experience with a hometown audience once again.

Founded in 1998 by North American Champion Jeannie Thornton, Clan Rince has been part of San Diego’s Irish dance community for more than 25 years. The school’s name means “dance family,” a fitting description of its welcoming approach to an art form that brings discipline, friendship and tradition together.

Jeannie Thornton, Alisa Dosch and Rori Ritchie lead the school, teaching children and adults who dance for enjoyment as well as students pursuing competition. Alongside technique, the school puts an emphasis on confidence, individual progress and the pleasure of belonging.

That spirit makes Clan Rince a natural part of this Christmas celebration. For young dancers in the audience, the guest appearance offers a chance to see local students take their place onstage. For families and friends, it is another reason to cheer: this is Irish culture shared through a community that continues to pass it on.

Before the Show: Give Yourselves Time for Dinner

Aim to meet downtown around 5 PM. An early meal gives you time to catch up and enjoy the Gaslamp Quarter before heading to the theatre, rather than watching the clock through dinner.

5:00 PM: Choose Your Dinner

For a family outing, The Old Spaghetti Factory at 275 Fifth Avenue offers a straightforward pasta-dinner option in the historic Gaslamp Quarter. Make a reservation and leave room in your plans for the walk north to the Balboa. Its current Saturday closing time is 9:30 PM, so keep this one as a before-show stop.

For a date night or a girls’ night, consider Water Grill San Diego at 615 J Street. Its seafood-focused menu and reservable tables make it a good choice when you want dinner to feel like part of the celebration. A 5 PM reservation gives your group time to enjoy the meal before making your way to the theatre.

Around 6:00 PM: A Sweet Stop, If Time Allows

If your dinner finishes early, visit Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop in the Gaslamp Quarter for an ice cream or chocolate stop before the performance. For families, enjoying the treat before the show keeps it part of the evening without relying on a late-night stop afterward.

Keep this part flexible. If dinner runs long, head straight to the theatre and enjoy a relaxed arrival.

6:30 PM: Arrive at the Balboa Theatre

The Balboa Theatre is at 868 Fourth Avenue in downtown San Diego. Plan to reach the theatre around 6:30 PM, allowing an hour before the performance for security screening and getting settled. Check the official directions and parking guide before leaving home.

If anyone in your party needs accessible seating or assistance, review the Balboa Theatre accessibility information before booking. Balcony seats require stairs, so choosing the right seating area is part of planning a comfortable evening.

During the Show: Let Christmas Take the Stage

At 7:30 PM, trade the December rush for the energy of Irish dance and the warmth of live music. As seen on PBS, An Irish Christmas brings award-winning dancers, musicians and singers together with holiday carols and Irish storytelling in a fully staged celebration.

You do not need to know Irish dance or have Irish roots to enjoy the evening. Listen to the rhythms, watch the dancers’ precision and let the songs and stories draw you into the traditions of Christmas in Ireland. Clan Rince’s returning guest appearance adds a local connection to that shared experience.

For a family, it is time spent watching and listening together. For friends, it is a festive reason to gather. For a couple, it is a date with something to talk about long after dinner.

After the Show: Keep the Conversation Going

If you would like to stay out afterward, Water Grill is an option for a late supper or dessert. It currently lists Saturday hours until 11 PM. Confirm its last seating and kitchen hours directly, and check the performance running time before choosing a reservation. Leave time to exit the theatre and walk to the restaurant.

Families may prefer to make dinner and a sweet stop their before-show treats, then head home after the curtain call. The best itinerary is the one that lets everyone enjoy the evening comfortably.

Restaurant hours and holiday schedules can change. Confirm December 19 opening times, menus and reservations with each business. Dining is booked separately and is not included with show tickets.

Your San Diego Christmas Evening Starts with a Seat

Keep the plan simple: reserve your seats, invite your favourite people and choose the dinner that suits your group. Then give yourselves an evening of music, dance and hometown pride with Clan Rince and An Irish Christmas.
